An Audi Q7 recently arrived at our workshop after its owner noticed oil appearing on the driveway. Oil leaks can begin with only a few drops, but they should always be investigated promptly. Escaping oil can spread across the engine, damage surrounding components and make it increasingly difficult to identify where the leak originally started.
After inspecting the vehicle, we traced the visible oil leak to the driver’s-side cam cover. Further investigation was required to establish whether the cover itself was damaged or whether the leak was coming from the gasket or another component beneath it.
Finding the source of the Audi Q7 oil leak
Oil around the top of an engine can travel considerably before it reaches the ground. Airflow, gravity and the shape of the engine all affect where it collects, meaning that the position of a patch on the driveway does not necessarily reveal the source of the problem.
Our inspection found that oil was escaping from the driver’s-side cam cover. To complete the repair correctly, the cam cover had to be removed so that the gasket and the components beneath it could be examined.
Once the cover was removed, we found that the rocker cover gasket required replacement. We also discovered an additional issue: two injector seals were leaking into the cam cover area.
This is why it is important to investigate an oil leak properly instead of replacing the first visible seal and assuming the fault has been resolved. Had only the outer gasket been replaced, the leaking injector seals would have remained and could have caused further problems.
Replacing the injector seals and rocker cover gasket
With the source of the leak confirmed, we replaced both affected injector seals along with the rocker cover gasket. The sealing surfaces were carefully prepared before the new components were fitted, helping ensure that the repair provided an effective and lasting seal.
The work carried out included:
Removing the driver’s-side cam cover
Inspecting the cam cover area and associated components
Identifying two leaking injector seals
Replacing both affected injector seals
Replacing the rocker cover gasket
Reassembling the engine correctly
Cleaning accumulated oil and residue from the engine
Checking the repaired area for any continuing signs of leakage
The engine was given a thorough clean following the repair. This is an important part of oil-leak work rather than simply a cosmetic finishing touch. Removing the old oil makes it much easier to check that the repair has been successful and to identify any unrelated leaks that might develop later.
Why cam cover oil leaks should not be ignored
A small oil leak may not initially affect how a vehicle drives, which makes it tempting to postpone the repair. Unfortunately, an unresolved leak can gradually become more serious.
Depending on where the oil travels, it can contaminate hoses, wiring, engine mounts and other components. Oil reaching hot parts of the engine or exhaust may also create an unpleasant burning smell and, in more serious cases, smoke from beneath the bonnet.
Continued oil loss can reduce the engine oil level as well. An engine depends on the correct quantity and specification of oil to lubricate and protect its internal components, so any unexplained loss should be checked rather than repeatedly topped up without finding the cause.
Signs that your Audi may have an oil leak include:
Oil spots beneath the vehicle
A burning-oil smell after driving
Visible oil around the engine
Smoke from the engine bay
An oil-level warning on the dashboard
The oil level falling between routine services
